Los Banos High senior Bryce Howard indicated after the firing of Fresno State coach Pat Hill that he was still interested in playing football for Fresno State.

The feeling was apparently not mutual among Fresno State’s new coaching staff as Howard’s scholarship offer was pulled a few weeks after Tim DeRuyter was hired.

“I guess they brought in four different o-linemen,” Howard said. “I was fifth on the list, and they brought in all four and they gave verbal commitments, so I didn’t get an offer.”

And just like that, Howard was back down to zero scholarship offers.

“It was a shock. I was pretty bummed,” Howard said. “You think you’re gonna go somewhere, then they pull it off the table. But there’s a plan, and I’ll end up where I’m supposed to end up.”

Though Howard had not verbally committed to Fresno State, other colleges knew the scholarship offer was on the table. Now Howard is opening his recruitment, which was never officially closed, back up.

The senior tackle spent Friday on an official visit to San Jose State, and has another official visit planned to Sacramento State.

“We’ll see,” he said. “If I get an offer (from San Jose), we’ll see what happens with it.”

Howard played on both the offensive and defensive lines during Los Banos’ 10-2 campaign in 2011, which ended in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III quarterfinals. Howard finished with 53 tackles (35 solo), a pair of sacks and a forced fumble.

The senior earned a few extra honors this week when he was selected to the second team of the CalHiSports Medium-School All-State Football Team. WAC foe Pio Vatuvei of Patterson, a USC commit, was named to the first-team defense.
