Pastor's commentary: The power of prayer

January 13, 2012

I was talking to one of our farmers, and he began to stress the need for rain.

I encouraged him by saying that God helps us in our time of need. His response was vague; he just didn't really believe in all that God stuff.

Nonetheless, I told him that I was going to bring this need before the Lord and trust that we'll see rain soon. As I thought about that conversation, I was reminded of James 5:17-18:

Elijah was a man with a nature like ours, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain; and it did not rain on the land for three years and six months.

And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth produced its fruit. As I meditated on these verses, I could feel the Lord prompting me to pray and to remember what he has promised us in his word.

Matthew 18:19-20: Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there in the midst of them.

Now that's the power of believing prayer. Notice that the Lord said concerning anything that we ask? I believe that rain is one of those anything's he's talking about in this verse. Maybe you're facing a personal challenge that seems impossible. Well, I'm here to remind you that prayer is the key that produces the results that we desire. Many times we can easily fall into the trap of worrying and thinking about defeat instead of doing what the man of God did in James 5;17-18. I want to encourage you to say a prayer and ask the Lord to meet the need of that which you desire.

Also would you please agree with me today while you're praying that the Lord would grant us plenty of rain for all of our farmers? Just think about it, what do you think would happen if we had hundreds of people here in Los Banos agreeing together in prayer for rain? I believe that we would see an obvious move of God's power demonstrated with plenty of rain throughout Central California.

I'd like to invite you to worship with us at Praise Fellowship International Church, 615 E St., Los Banos. We meet every Sunday at 10 a.m. and Wednesday 7 p.m.
