DOS PALOS -- After a report that a stabbing had occurred about 1:30 p.m. Monday, police launched an investigation that led to the arrest of Jose Jimenez, 20, of Dos Palos.
The stabbing in the 2600 block of Blossom Street was reported to the Los Banos Police Department by an area hospital, where the victim had been flown. He is expected to survive his injuries.
With Police Chief Barry Mann leading the investigation, assisted by officer Cliff Battles, talking with witnesses led to the identification of Jimenez as the suspect.
About 11 p.m., Jimenez was delivered to the department by deputy Dennis Johnson from the Merced County Sheriff's Department.
"We had advised the Sheriff's Department earlier in the day that we wanted Jimenez for the assault, and deputy Johnson did a great job in locating him several hours later and delivering him to us," Mann said in a news release.
During an interview with Jimenez, he admitted being in the fight on Blossom Street, then quickly wanted to recant when he was told that the victim was cooperating, according to the news release.
Jimenez, who made initial claims of self-defense, was booked into the Merced County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and participation in a criminal street gang.
"Jimenez is a known active gang member in the Dos Palos area and with the assistance of deputy Johnson, his opportunities to continue assaulting others in the city of Dos Palos just decreased," Mann said in the news release.
'Armed and dangerous' parolee jailed Monday
Dos Palos Police Officer Cliff Battles on Monday arrested a subject considered armed and dangerous on Monday for a parole violation.
The California Department of Corrections issued a warrant with a caution of "armed and dangerous" for Tony Anthony Civitillo, 44.
Civitillo was considered a "high-control parolee" with a history of assaults, battery, drug use and possession of firearms, according to a police department news release.
Battles saw Civitillo in a vehicle in the area of Highway 33 and Carmellia at around 12:30 p.m. Battles stopped the vehicle and took Civitillo into custody.
It marked the eighth arrest of a parolee at large in eight weeks by the Dos Palos Police Department.
