A vehicle pursuit turned into a suicide attempt on Sunday, police said.

Cmdr. Ray Reyna Jr. said at 11:35 p.m., Sgt. Jason Hedden attempted to stop a yellow Jeep for running a stop sign in the area of Claremont and St. Patricks drives. The driver Kevin Guidry, 41, of Los Banos did not stop, police said.

Guidry drove his vehicle into a field south of Place Road and momentarily evaded police. Hedden found Guidry running through a dirt field. When Hedden attempted to arrest Guidry, he challenged the sergeant to kill him and began fighting, police said. The officer received minor injuries, police said.

Guidry was eventually arrested and taken to the Los Banos Jail, where he was held on suspicion of failing to yield to an emergency vehicle with disregard for public safety, obstructing an officer, resisting arrest with violence, and a Merced County felony vandalism and probation violation warrant. Guidry is in custody at the John Latorraca Correctional Facility in lieu of $35,000 bail.
