Police: Two shot in attempted armed robbery

Two men are in custody;victims released from hospital

Two men are in custody after allegedly shooting a pair of local residents during an attempted armed robbery on Sunday.

Christian Berrelleza, 28, and Carlos Hernan Rangel Fiero, 20, are at the Merced County Main Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, robbery and conspiracy to commit a crime. No bail has been set due to immigration warrants.

The incident took place in the evening.

Police responded to a report of a shooting in the south alley of the 600 Block of I Street at 5:32 p.m. Officers located a 59-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg and a 48-year-old man shot in the upper back.

According to police, the shooting victims said Berrelleza and Fiero approached them with a gun and demanded their belongings. One of the victims attempted to run, leading to both men being shot, police said.

Officers Evan Swearingen and Surina Gonzalez located 28-year-old Berrelleza running from the scene, police said. Berrelleza was apprehended after a short chase and a firearm was recovered.

Detectives Eduardo Solis and Jake Bento located Fiero in the 700 Block of C Street a few hours after the shooting.

“This incident did not appear to be gang related, however we know the victims knew the suspects,” Cmdr. Ray Reyna Jr. said.

The 48-year-old victim was taken to a Modesto area hospital for his injuries and the

second man was transported to Memorial Hospital, Los Banos. Both men were treated and released.

Pursuit

Several teens, some of whom are suspected gang members, were arrested Sunday morning after allegedly leading police on a chase in a stolen car.

Officer Fiafaimane Leao reportedly attempted to stop a brown Honda Accord in the 300 Block of H Street at 4:21 a.m. after the vehicle ran a stop sign.

The driver, a 15-year-old, failed to pull over after seeing officer’s emergency lights and siren, police said.

The Leao pursued the Honda as it continued to the west end of the city and then turned east. The hit the south curb of Second and I streets.

Police said a male exited the passenger side and fled on foot.

Police said the vehicle had been stolen earlier in the evening while the vehicle’s owner was asleep.

Officers placed the following passengers under arrest:

Jasiah Herena, 18, of San Jose, on suspicion of failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, conspiracy to commit a crime, obstructing a police officer, participation in a criminal street gang,possession of stolen property and an out of county warrant. His bail is $65,000.

Ramon Bravo, 18, of San Jose on suspicion of failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, conspiracy to commit a crime, obstructing a police officer, participation in a criminal street gang, and possession of stolen property. His bail is $50,000.

The driver, a Modesto resident and a 16-year-old passenger from San Jose resident, on suspicion of failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, conspiracy to commit a crime, obstructing a police officer, participation in a criminal street gang, and possession of stolen property.

Stabbing

Police responding to a stabbing on the 700 block of Delaware Avenue at 1:23 a.m. Sunday.

Reyna said law enforcement originally received the report as a shooting, but upon arrival they found a 31-year-old man suffering from stab wounds to the chest.

The victim was airlifted to a Modesto area hospital where he was treated and released.

Reyna said the victim is refusing to provide further details about the incident.
