Louis Navarro improved six spots from the Sac-Joaquin Cross Country Subsection Division III race to the Section Meet on Saturday -- from 18th to 12th -- but fell just short of qualifying for the state tournament.

Navarro ran the 5-kilometer Folsom course in 16 minute, 57 seconds, but the eighth-place finisher -- Vista del Lago's Zach Jaeger with a time of 16:43 -- was the last qualifier for the state meet.

"He had an outstanding race. He ran his heart out," Los Banos coach Elizabeth Stone said. "He knew going into this race he would have to move up quite a few spaces to qualify. He moved up to 12th, which was really remarkable to me."

Pacheco High had two varsity runners in the Division IV boys race, with Ryan Salcido finishing 29th (18:13) and Samuel Regalado in 67th (19:25).

But probably the best part of the meet for both Los Banos and Pacheco was the lower levels. LB's frosh/soph girls placed fourth in the Division III race, with Sarah Gama placing 10th (14:34), Brittney Berek 18th (14:45) and Nicole Berek 22nd (14:57) in the 2-mile race.

"It was kind of bittersweet to be ending the season, but I think they'll be excited to come back," Stone said. "They've showed so much improvement over the course of this season, the possibilities are limitless of what they can do. They're already talking about running track and getting faster for next year."

Ruth Perez (40th, 16:38), Kristina Martinez (42nd, 16:59), Roselle Reyes (43rd, 17:01) and Alejandra Villegas (45th, 17:43) rounded out the Los Banos runners.

Pacheco's sophomore boys team placed third in the Division IV race (68 points to winner St. Marys' 39 and second-place Bret Harte's 40), led by Sebastian Barragan in 11th (12:57).

"All my other runners went consistently right after him," Pacheco coach Jerry Lujan said. "I was very pleased with that, this being their first time at the section level. And we had a few freshmen in that group as well."

Johnny Lira (20th, 13:22), Jairo Cabrera (22nd, 13:36), Flavio Orozco (27th, 14:12), Leon Palao (28th, 14:16), Martin Perez (32nd, 14:25) and Albert Escobedo (40th, 15:03) filled out the Pacheco team.

The Pacheco frosh/soph girls tied with third-place St. Mary's at 74 points, but fell to fourth on a tiebreaker. Summerville's Morgan Murray earned revenge against Pacheco's Venus Canaveral, who beat her at the subsection meet, with a 5-second victory for the championship -- 14:34 to Canaveral's 14:39.

"She was kind of disappointed, but because of the weather, it was trying for her," Lujan said. "She wasn't able to have the same kick that she had a subsections."

Canaveral's Pacheco teammates finished in order of Daysi Rivas (11th, 15:35), Sierra Martinez (who took a rain-induced fall in the mud during the race and finished 23rd at 16:11), Emily Barajas (33rd, 16:41), Destinee Rios (34th, 16:46), Bianca Gallegos (40th, 17:09) and Brenda Carrillo (48th, 19:22).
