This time around, photography will be the medium of choice at the Los Banos Library.

Five black-and-white photographs of outdoor scenes in California, and one of Arcos de la Frontera, Spain, grace the west wall of the library, designated for local artists.

Donna Keck, a retired art teacher, said she's been making art since she graduated in 1947 from Minot State University with a degree in art and a minor in English.

"I think I got into it, more so, in the seventh grade," Keck said.

In 1963, Keck moved to Los Banos from North Dakota, where she grew up, when her husband got a job teaching history at Los Banos Junior High School.

Her father, a philosophy professor, and mother, a piano teacher, were both musicians and supported her artistic pursuits.

Keck said she shoots photographs wherever she goes, and doesn't necessarily plan trips with the goal of taking pictures.

"But I did take a trip to Germany, Austria, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and then I took the trip to Spain," Keck said.

Most of her work, Keck said, is done in black-and-white, and she prefers film to digital.

"I don't think digital has the nuance that film does," Keck said.

All of her work done in film, which is most of it, is developed inside the darkroom in her home, according to Keck.

"I can do it to my satisfaction," Keck said. "Whereas, if I send it out, I wouldn't have any say in the results."

Nick West, a longtime friend of Keck's, brought Keck to the attention of the library exhibit's organizers.

"I suggested her, because she has done very good work," West said.

Keck's photos, West said, have a timeless and classic feel. West said that Keck has always been interested in the arts, and he described her as creative and interested in life.

"She doesn't sit still," West said. "She's interested in what's going on in the world and with her friends and family."

Photography is not Keck's only artistic outlet, she also paints and as a child she trained in piano and voice. She said she was one class short of attaining a minor in music.

Two of her oil paintings, a portrait of her husband and one of still life, will be part of Los Banos Arts Council's Weekend with the Arts on Sept. 9-12.

Patti Ryan, a member of the Friends of the Library and the person in charge of the local-artists program, said the six photographs can be seen inside the library until mid-October.

Ryan said Joan Bengtson, an organizer of the Weekend with the Arts, is next on the docket to display her paintings in the library.
