Colby Copp finished the season with a spectacular show.

Sure, he finished first in the 65cc Novice and second in the 65cc Open class standings of the 2010 Los Banos Top Gun Summercross Series, but the spectacular part was in his second-to-last race, the Novice class.

Copp found himself trailing Woodlake's Brandon Hernandez, who showed up on the scene after racing in nationals in the Midwest. The race included riders in the Intermediate, Novice and Beginner classes. Pushing himself to catch up with the Intermediate class speedster, Copp launched himself on the main jump in front of the grandstands without a clue as to what waited for him on the other side of the jump.

"I didn't know I was going to crash," he said afterwards.

Copp landed and his front wheel, which he had turned too much, planted into the dirt, sending Copp cartwheeling across the track to the gasps of the crowd.

Yet, even before he came to a complete stop, Copp was on his feet and racing for the side of the track, a move which stopped the paramedics who were already racing to his aid.

"If he can get up, he gets off the track, so he doesn't get hit," said Nathan Copp, Colby's father. "That's something we taught him."

Added Copp, "It was instinct. I learned to not do it again."

With help from his family, Copp tore the broken visor from his helmet, hopped back on his bike, and took off again, to the delight of the crowd. After the race, a self-inspection revealed a small cut on his thigh, but no other injuries. His helmet, though the visor had broken, was also intact, allowing him to finish his final race of the day.

Being the final round, plenty of riders pushed themselves harder than they have all season. Several mentioned that this was their best round of the summer.

"Today was the best I've ridden, feels like. The bike is running smooth," said Joey Parry, who was third in the 85cc Beginner class and sixth in the 85cc Open/Big Wheel class. "In the middle of the year, I went over the bars and bruised my foot. It's been a rough season. I had to come back from injuries, and I've been playing football."

Ben Roland Jr. has also seen improvement, despite finishing deep in the pack in both of his races.

"I need to work on going faster, jumping and that's about it," Roland said. "This was my best one yet."

Roland, who raced in the 50cc classes this summer, will practice with a 65cc bike during the offseason, and possibly race it some next year.

For Patrick Spadafore, the final round was all about relaxing and enjoying himself.

"Before, it was if I didn't win, I was mad at the world. Now I'm just having fun," Spadafore said. "You can be fast on the bike, but if you don't have your head in the game, you're not going anywhere."

Spadafore saw a definite change when he stopped worrying, going from the bottom of the field to an average of about third, which is where he finished in the 450cc Novice standings.

"The biggest thing in motocross is family," he said. "Without that, you can't do anything."

Brody Silva placed fourth in the 65cc Beginner class and third in the 65cc Open class, then went to the pit to celebrate his birthday with cupcakes.

"The last moto was cool," he said. "I was up front with the intermediates and novice, and I got a cup."

Dos Palos native James Price was one of the few racers who didn't feel his times were on par with his usual. He has an excuse though -- he hasn't raced in six months.

"Three years ago, my freshman and sophomore years, I raced full time," Price said. "Then I went to college (Modesto JC), and I didn't have the time. I'm at school, plus I'm busy working."

Price came late the last few weekends, and made sure he was on time at least once.

"I figured I had to do it at least once, and this was the last one," he said. "I lost a little bit of lap time in the six months or so since I've raced."
