Police chief says competition was stiff

Two Los Banos Police Department detectives received promotions Tuesday afternoon.
Jason Hedden, 28, and Ivan Mendez, 30, were sworn in as sergeants.
Police Chief Gary Brizzee complimented the two men for being chosen after facing stiff competition from their colleagues.
"The testing process for sergeant was much like it was for commander, it was a very difficult job," Brizzee said. "In a sense it was refreshing because it reminds me, and some of the command staff, how good of employees we have.
"In the end I think these two are going to do a great job for us."
Hedden, who grew up in Waterford, joined the local police department in 2004. He said being in law enforcement is something he's wanted to do since he was a child. As a sergeant he's hoping to impart wisdom on the people he will supervise.
"I think I've learned a lot of things in investigations. During our time in the department we worked a variety of special assignments (I want) to just be able to develop a staff and teach them things we've learned."
Mendez, a Dos Palos native, had specific reasons for seeking a career in law enforcement.
"Just giving the opportunity to make a difference," Mendez said. "Growing up in a low-income family and seeing how people struggle to survive every day, it's just making a difference and keeping people safe."
Mendez joined the Los Banos department in 2001.
He said being able to motivate police personnel will be key for him in his new job.
"It's not all about running around and arresting people," Mendez said. "It's about handling the calls and making sure the citizens are taken care of."
