Silva Streak -- family keeps close on track
Summercross Round Six offers fast rides, big jumps at Los Banos Fairgrounds

When Matt Silva was young, he wanted to ride motocross bikes. His parents, though, wouldn't let him.
When he was 22 working as a machinist, Silva's boss got him into racing. That was 17 years ago. Silva, now 39, is still racing.
"I'm old and slow now, but I still do it," he said.
He does so, of course, with the approval of his wife, Sara Lightfoot, who used to race vintage bikes with her late father, Mike Lightfoot. The family is into its third generation of racing in young Brody Silva.
"A lot of it is to keep him doing it," said Matt Silva. "It keeps everybody out of trouble. We spend too much time practicing to do anything else. It keeps him on the straight and narrow."
At 39, Matt Silva is one of a handful of older competitors in a sport that hastens a body's aging process. But Brody Silva, who placed fifth in the 65cc Open class and fourth in the 65cc Beginner class Aug. 7 at Los Banos Fairgrounds, doesn't think his old man is too old to race.
"I like it because it lets us ride together when we practice," he said.
Matt Silva thinks he has about five more years of racing in him.
"It won't be for a while," he said. "Until the body says no, I'm going to keep going."
Silva placed second in the +30 Intermediate, taking the first moto and second in the second to Donny O'Keefe of Salinas. Brody Silva, in addition to fifth in the 65cc Open, placed fourth in the 65cc Beginner class.
The two, along with a daughter who rides for fun, practice on a facility at the property of a friend, Nathan Copp. The group even has a trainer.
"Johnny Cook is a trainer, he comes out and trains the kids," said Copp, whose son Colby and step-son Patrick Spadafore race at Summercross. "We try to help out as many kids as we can."
Steven Lopez qualified for the Top Gun Main Event for the first time this season, placing 11th. The main event involves 16 riders with the top times of the day, with the top six on the starting gate and the rest of the riders scattered throughout the track.
Topher Ingalls of Templeton won the main event.
Another local, Patrick Spadafore, was just shy of qualifying for the main event, taking sixth in the last chance qualifier.
"My starts are what's getting me," Spadafore said. "You have to get out in front. Get a good start."
Lopez also was second in the 250cc Novice class, recovering from a bad start in the first moto. Lopez nearly lost control on the lumps in the middle of the track, and by the time he recovered, he was back in the pack.
"I went over to the right side where it was slick, and it almost threw me off," Lopez said.
David Waite had a better Saturday than the week before, when he almost broke his wrist. Waite started off the day with a third in the first moto of the 450cc Beginner class, and later finished second in the second moto, when two riders in front of him collided and went down.
"Pull away fast," Waite said about his first thoughts when the riders in front of him went down. Next up was Todd Pittman, the man in front of him. "I wanted to catch him, but I didn't want to burn out for the next race."
Waite finished second overall in the class, as well as third in the 250cc Beginner class.
Summercross returns Aug. 14 for Round Seven. The first motos will start around 4 p.m.
