Horses, burros available for adoption

Residents of the Los Baños area will have the opportunity to add a horse or burro to their families, when the Bureau of Land Management brings its Wild Horse and Burro Adoption Program to the Against the Crooked Sky Horse Stables, 17982 West Cotton Road, Los Baños, on March 20.

The BLM will offer 30 horses, mostly yearlings, and 10 burros for public adoption. Anyone interested can preview the animals when they arrive at about 3 p.m. on March 19.

The event will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 20. Adoptions begin with silent bidding from 9 to 10 a.m. Animals not taken during bidding will be available for a $125 adoption fee.

Don't be a crab

The Los Baños Rotary Club will be holding its annual all-you-can--eat crab feed on March 26 in the Exhibit Hall of the Fairgrounds. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with a hosted bar, followed by dinner at 7 p.m. Meal includes crab, salad, bread, pasta and wine. Raffle and door prizes will be given away. Proceeds help fund the high school scholarships that are awared each year by the rotarians. Tickets are $40 and can be obtained by calling Gene Lieb at 826-3831 ext. 551.

Hunting license certification

Those interested in receiving their hunting license can attend a hunter education training workshop to receive their certification. Upcoming session will be held March 20-21 at 8:30 a.m. Sessions are limited to 25 students. To sign up call 826-3600. Hunter education books are available at 22008 Henry Miller Ave. Candidates must read and understand the material. The course covers firearm safety and handling, sportsmanship and ethics, wildlife management and conservation, archery, black powder, wildlife identification, game care, first aid and survival. Attendees must pass the test with an 80 percent or better. The hunter education instructor determines whether a student is qualified to receive a certification of completion. A student who is unsafe or fails to demonstrate good sportsmanship will not be issued a certificate. Other session dates include May 15-16, July 24-25, Aug. 21-22, Sept. 25-26 and Oct. 30-31.
