The Los Baños High girls varsity soccer team played its second game of the season on Wednesday afternoon against visiting Mariposa High of the Southern League.
Things didn't look bad, either.
Los Baños improved to 0-1-1 following a 1-1 tie.
The Tigers opened up their season last week with a 5-0 road loss against the Hilmar High Yellowjackets of the Western Athletic Conference -- which is the league LB will be joining next year when it moves down to Division IV.
"We're still trying out some new players," Los Baños' assistant varsity soccer coach Jose Mandujano said. "Most of the girls out here played on our traveling team for the past two years.
"Those girls do pretty good."
Los Baños' girls soccer program has had a travel soccer program the last two years, and the program is beginning to reap the benefits.
"Anything except a loss is OK," Mandujano said. "Last year (Mariposa) beat us 2-1.
"I think we owe it to the defsense. The defense did its job. They're fast.
"We had a lot of chances to score but we just didn't capatilize on it."
Los Baños capatilized on Brianna Bostick's goal in the 13th minute of the contest, however.
Bostick put the Tigers up 1-0 with a deep shot outside of the box.
Mariposa's Malon Lasater scored for the Grizzlies to tie the game at 1-1.
Los Baños' junior goalie Leila Melendez had a solid game inside the net.
Melendez finished with 9 saves, which included plenty down the stretch of the second half.
In the 54th minute, Los Baños' Janet Medina got a scoring opportunity after firing at the net. Medina waited patiently for her shot, which missed wide right.
In minute No. 48 and 62 Melendez made clutch saves which prevented Mariposa from putting away a potential game-winning goal.
In the 73rd minute, Los Baños senior Jennifer Medina helped clear a dangerous ball that Mariposa was threatining to score against Melendez.
The junior goalkeeper made another save after that to help preserve the tie.
With less than five minutes to play, April Hernandez found a streaking Mariah Gonzalez, who just missed on what would have been the game-winning goal.
The Tigers will be in action today at home against Livingston High at 3:30 p.m.
