One of the main focuses of Los Baños' LULAC, League of United Latin American Citizens, chapter is its outreach to students. Local members recently held an event that provided just that.

The hosted Leadership Summit was held Saturday at Los Baños High School and while attendance was low from local youth, Roger Cervantes, club president, was pleased with surrounding council attendance and the discussions and plans made for the local chapter.

On its Web site, www.LULAC.org, the program states its mission is to advance the economic condition, educational attainment, political influence, housing, health and civil rights of the Hispanic population of the United States.

The local chapter prides itself on education for Los Baños' youth.

"We want to make sure our kids go to college. We give them the tools, the education, the knowledge, to find ways to continue school, to motivate them and help them, more or less, make up their minds on what they want to do and what they want to study," Cervantes said.

"The youth summit is targeted to students, empowering them to form actual youth groups within LULAC so they can get involved within the community," Cervantes said.

Cervantes said because of the four-day weekend the conference fell on this year, many students didn't attend. But the ones that did have decided to come together to help build a youth LULAC council for Los Baños.

Los Baños High School students Christian Cervantes, Alma Sanchez and Diana Ramirez attended the event and worked with youth members of Hollister's LULAC council.

The students agreed in their first time attending a LULAC event, they were interested in seeing what it was about.

"It's interesting," Sanchez said.

Ramirez agreed and said "we're learning a lot about the history and how to build the youth council here in Los Baños."

Christian Cervantez said they all planned on utilizing what they learned by applying it to the community.

"They're excited to get things going here," Roger Cervantes said of the youth's plans. "That was basically our goal, it get the youth council started."

Cervantes said the LULAC Youth Leadership Conference is set for the end of July and he's hoping it'll be held at Pacheco High School.
