Varsity girls play Merced team tough, but turnovers spoil results
Tigers played solid defense throughout the game

MERCED -- The Los Baños High girls varsity basketball team came out and threw punches with Merced on Tuesday evening.
However, Britney Huddleston and Britany Scott of the Bears knocked down clutch 3-pointers down the stretch to help Merced to a 41-36 league win.
"I thought we played hard throughout the game and ultimately our turnovers were just too much to overcome," Los Baños head coach Mike Perkins said. "Some of the turnovers were caused by going a little too fast -- some from being too tentative and others because players were pre-determining who to pass to."
Merced (9-2 CCC) got off to somewhat of a good start against Los Baños, which fell to 5-6 in the CCC,11-15 overall. The Bears led 11-6 after the first quarter. That was followed by LB outscoring Merced 6-4 in the second quarter to make it a 15-12 game at the intermission.
In the second half, Los Baños didn't quit, either.
"We played solid defense for most of the game," Perkins added. "But our post rotations broke down too much in the second half and that resulted in some easy scoring opportunities for Merced in the paint.
"If we can eliminate the turnovers, finish around the basket a little better and clean up our rotations defensively we could have (had) a solid game against Pitman (Thursday)."
Lalli Bobadilla knocked down a trey for the Tigers to make it a two-point game. Dana Carlotti followed by taking the ball to the rim on the next trip down the court to tie it at 17-17.
A couple of minutes later, Carlotti handed the Tigers a 20-19 advantage that it held for 30 seconds.
Huddleston, who finished with 11 points, sensed when to stick the 3-ball. Huddleston made it 22-20 and Merced never looked back.
Michelle Ceja (7 points) and Ieashia Isby (5 points) each cut the Tigers' deficit to one in the second half.
Serryna Gonzalez, who was moved up from the girls sophomore team last week, scored her only two points of the game to tie it at 34.
Carlotti made it a two-point game and a three-point game down the stretch of the fourth quarter.
Huddleston and Scott, however, both stuck 3-pointers to hold off LB and escape with the victory.
Carlotti led the Tigers with 10 points and forward Bruianna Harden chipped in with 8 points.
The Tigers finished out the 2009-10 basketball season on Thursday on the road against Pitman High of Turlock.
