Officials continue to seek restitution
Los Banos pursues $1.7 million that was taken

The city is continuing to try to recoup the nearly $2 million embezzled by a former city employee.
This week two cars that were formerly owned by Mary Ann Jones went up for auction, according to Interim Police Chief Mark Knapp.
Jones, who was employed by the city as a utility billing technician, was sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading no contest to embezzlement charges Oct. 20. As part of her plea agreement Jones was ordered to pay the city of Los Baños $1.75 million in restitution.
Knapp said a 2009 Chevrolet pickup truck and a 1987 Corvette were put up for auction this week. He said Jones had a loan of about $19,000 on the pickup truck so the bid for it begins with that amount. He said another vehicle, a Buick Jones used to own, was repossessed because she owed too much money for it to benefit the city by acquiring it.
Knapp said the city has taken control of some storage units and a utility trailer Jones owned. He said Los Baños is keeping those items for its own use.
Jones owned three homes, two in Dos Palos and one in Merced. When asked about the residences, City Attorney William Vaughn said he had obtained possession of them for Los Baños and now it is up to the city to decide what to do with them.
Knapp said the Merced home has been turned over to a property management firm that's helping the city rent it to someone.
"It can be used in rental until the market gets better," Knapp said.
He said the same thing may be done with one of the Dos Palos homes, but there is a mortgage issue that has to be cleared up first.
Knapp said the other Dos Palos home and the furniture inside it has been turned over to the city. Knapp said the furniture is being auctioned off at propertyroom.com.
Mayor Tommy Jones said he is not satisfied with what has been recovered from Mary Ann Jones.
"I want us to look under every rock to see if some money was hid, including looking at family members," the mayor said.
Knapp said the restitution agreement does not end with the assets Mary Ann Jones has turned in. He said that the restitution agreement continues until the city gets the full $1.75 million.
"The main thing is the restitution order will hold for years to come," Knapp said.
Mary Ann Jones could be eligible for parole as soon as 2013.
