Sports bar opens for business on I Street
By Corey Pride
For the past 10 years Todd Milne and his business partner Matt Biggs dreamed of owning a bar.
The pair are painting contractors by trade. But as they were passing through Los Baños they saw an opportunity to pursue their longtime desire. The men discovered what they believe is an underserved clientele.
"I studied Los Baños for about six months," Milne said. "They need an outlet to have fun. There's no place to go within an hour radius to here. So we came up with the idea, me and my partner, about putting TVs in and making it a sports bar during the day and having good entertainment at night."
Last week Milne and Biggs opened Los Baños Bar and Grill. The business, which is located on the 800 block of I St., serves as a sports bar Monday through Wednesday and during the day the rest of the week. Thursday through Saturday nights it turns into Club Evolution.
Opening New Year's weekend worked well, Milne said.
"Being that it was New Year's and Christmas, and the turnout we had, ya know you figured that everybody was broke and don't have no money," Milne said. "They slammed this place. It was off the hook, they loved it."
Milne said the positive reaction continued through the weekend.
"We've had 600 people come through here already," he said. "Word's getting out and people are liking what we got goin' on here. Normally it takes what we've had come through here a month or two. It's already poppin'. It's up and crackin' already."
Los Baños Bar and Grill employs 13 people, including five security guards. Milne said he expects security, a dress code and a cover charge to keep troublemakers out of Club Evolution. Milne said a free taxi service to and from the club is also offered to party-goers.
At Club Evolution, Thursday is oldies night, Friday is hip hop, and on Saturday Spanish music is played. Milne said he and Biggs also plan to feature local bands at the club.
Milne hopes people do keep Los Baños Bar and Grill in mind when they go out for lunch or dinner.
Milne spends about 14 hours a day at Los Baños Bar and Grill making sure things are set up and running smoothly. He said the job is better than painting and the hours will decrease as time passes.
He said he enjoys being a sports bar owner because it allows him to meet people and provide an environment where they can relax.
"It's fun for everybody, kids of all ages and adults," Milne said.
