MERCED -- For a second time this season, Los Baños High's girls sophomore basketball team made it to the championship game of a tournament and lost.
On Wednesday night the Tigers came up short against Davis High of Modesto in the championship game of the Golden Valley High girls sophomore basketball tournament, 31-29.
"This is the second time we've been to the championship and lost," Los Baños head coach Saul Mejia said. "It's nice to win a championship, but these were more learning experiences heading into (Central California Conference play)."
Davis broke a 29-29 tie with 7 seconds left and took the lead from the free-throw line.
Los Baños got the ball to its most accurate outside shooter in freshman Alexis Barcellos, who got her shot that would have won the game deflected.
Barcellos finished with 13 points and only hit one 3-ball.
Los Baños only hit one shot from beyond the arc as a team.
"We took a couple of 3s -- not as many as we usually do," Mejia said. "We were trying to get to the basket to get Davis' big girls in foul trouble.
"Davis had a similar style to us -- both quick and athletic. They had one really good player, but Arianna (Marshall) played great defense on her. She scored 11 points but was averaging 25 (in the first two games)."
LB sophomore post player Morgan Hurley finished with 8 points and Felicia Peko 4. Alyssa Luna had 3 and Marshall rounded out the total with 1.
Davis opened the game on a 9-0 run and Los baños made it 18-16 at the break.
"It was pretty much neck-and-neck the rest of the way," Mejia said.
On Tuesday, Los Baños knocked off host Golden Valley 44-35 in the semifinals.
Luna led the team with 12 points and Hurley had 11. Barcellos finished with 8, Christina Soares 6 and Christine Jordan 3. Marshall had 2 and so did Serryna Gonzalez.
During Monday's opening round of the GV tourney, Los Baños knocked off Chowchilla High's Redskins 65-21.
Hurley led the Tigers with a game-high 31 points.
Barcellos had 17 and Marshall had 6. Soares (4), Jordan (3), Luna (2) and Kellie Younce (2) rounded out the total.
Los Baños fell to 10-4 in preseason play after the loss.
On Tuesday the Tigers will open up CCC at home against Golden Valley High of Merced at 5:45 p.m.
"I think we should do pretty well," Mejia concluded. "We gained a lot of experience (from tournaments).
"And like I said, (Barcellos and Hurley) will be the key to winning a lot of our games.
"A lot of girls are stepping up and we're going to be a definite threat in the CCC."
