Directional signs designed to attract tourists were placed throughout town last week.

Redevelopment Agency Director Elaine Post said there are a total of 13 signs. They are located on Pacheco Boulevard, Mercey Springs Road, Sixth, H and I streets.

The signs alert motorists to the tule elk area, the San Luis Reservoir, City Hall and Los Baños' downtown.

"I think it will be a success if there's any increase in the public's use of Los Baños' amenities and the amenities of surrounding areas," Councilman Tom Faria said.

Faria sat on the city's Economic Development Committee, which refined the idea. Faria said he first heard the idea of directional signs while he was on the campaign trail. He said it was brought up in a forum as a way to draw people into the city.

Post said she believes the signs will help educate people passing through Los Baños on what the area has to offer.

"We want them to know what's here," Post said. "A lot of people, all they know is Pacheco (Boulevard)."

Post said she thinks the signs will have a strong impact.

The signs costed $12,000. Mayor Tommy Jones said while not everybody will stop and spend money in Los Baños, he's hoping enough people will to make the signs worthwhile.

"When you got such a large percentage (of people) coming through you're not going to get them all, but every little percentage helps," Jones said. "I'm happy we got them up."
