Winegrape growers are adjusting to a changing market for grapes as a result of the economic recession. Some growers have had difficulty selling their fruit as wineries adjust to slowing sales. Demand for grapes that go into higher priced wines seems to have taken the biggest hit.
Farm advisors suggest mushrooms for family farmers
Mushrooms as a viable crop for small family farms was suggested to growers attending a workshop in the San Joaquin Valley. Farm advisors say production costs can be low while growers can earn good prices for their mushrooms at farmers markets. Mushrooms are not easy to grow, but advisors suggested that a family could grow the mushrooms without additional labor. The spawn or "seeds" for the mushrooms can be purchased from various vendors.
