Masters and their pets came out for some exercise and to support the cause of less fortunate dogs and cats Sunday.

Los Baños Volunteers for Animals held its Seventh annual Dog Day in the Park event. Donations raised during the day will go toward needs at the city's animal shelter.

Laurel Carle, a member of the volunteer group, said she was pleased with the crowd. She said the money the event garnered this year comes at a time when the shelter finds itself paying for vaccinations and helping out with some animals' other medical costs.

The event, which was held at Pacheco Park, featured contests, a live band, pet-related information booths, a raffle, a barbecue lunch and a silent auction.

Russ Thomas, whose Yorkshire Terrier placed second in the musical sits competition, said he came to the event because it's a good cause. The sentiment was shared by many others.

"I'll probably spend more than I should," Doug George said as he went from table to table bidding on items in the silent auction.

George and his wife, Sonia, rescued their dog Natasha about two years ago. The animal was found in a parking lot in poor condition with her coat sullied. Sunday the dog had a pristine appearance as George carried the small canine around Pacheco Park.

Will Wilson and his family attended the event for the first time. Wilson said he also believes helping the animal shelter is a good cause. Abandoned animals are close to Wilson's heart. His German Sheppard, Champion, came into his life after a family moved and had to leave the dog behind.

It is not known how much money was raised during the day, but in past years organizers have received nearly $1,500 from the fundraiser.

Carle said the volunteers didn't set a specific amount they wanted raised, but they were hoping to get more than they received in 2007, the last time the event was held.
