Son of Los Banos resident wins San Diego State coaching spot
ENTERPRISE STAFF REPORT
Los Baños resident Gordon Borges' son, Al Borges, was recently named head offensive coordinator for San Diego State University's football program.
Borges has been a Division I offensive coordinator for the past 22 years, and was recently the offensive coordinator at Auburn University, where he helped lead the Tigers to a 42-9 record.
"(Al) just completed the summer session of football, and now they're on vacation until August," the elder Borges said. "They're trying to put together a winning team."
San Diego State head football coach Brady Hoke named Borges the offensive coordinator at the same time he named former New Mexico head coach Rocky Long the defensive coordinator.
"Al Borges brings a wealth of experience with him to San Diego State," Hoke said in a press release. "He did a tremendous job in the SEC and the Pac-10. As a defensive coach, I found it very hard to defend Al's teams. He creates problems for defenses with leverage and formation and it's physical offense.
"One thing I have always respected about Al is that he gets the ball in the hands of the playmakers, which is what good offensive coaches do."
Borges is a two-time nominee for Frank Boyles Assistant Coach of the Year. Long and Borges were both coaches on the same staff at UCLA in 1997.
Borges was the offensive coordinator at UCLA, and he also coached at California and Oregon as well.
"This is like coming home," Borges said in a press release. "I have always believed that San Diego State is a place where you can win football games. My perception is that the opportunity to win is there.
"I have known Brady (Hoke) for a long time. He is a solid guy and a very good football coach who has proven he can turn football programs around. I don't see why he won't do the same thing at San Diego State.
"My juices are flowing and I am ready to get going. I am really optimistic about the promise the program shows, particularly with a guy like Brady, who has direction and vision."
In four years as the Tigers' offensive coordinator, Borges helped Auburn beat nine teams ranked in the top nine. He also saw four of his offensive players earn All-American honors and eight players garner all-SEC honors.
Auburn averaged more than 32 points a game twice during his stint. Borges also coached Jason Campbell (Washington Redskins) and Carnell "Cadillac" Williams.
While with UCLA, Borges coached Cade McNown, who was an All-American finalist for the Heisman Trophy.
He was there from 1996-2000. During his career for the Bruins, Borges' teams won 20 straight ball games and won two Pac-10 championships.
