Twice a year the Los Baños Elks Lodge hosts some of Merced County's most honorable citizens for a veterans' lunch. The first event for 2009 was held June 25 at the lodge where more than 100 veterans and their families were celebrated for their contributions.

After a series of patriotic songs and well-wishes from Elks Exalted Ruler Richard Frontella, Norm Donovan, lodge secretary and Pastor Steve Hammond, the group enjoyed a lunch prepared and served by some of the Elks.

"This started two years ago by Raul Gutierrez," Frontella said. "It's a way to honor our veterans. As long as there are veterans, they will never be forgotten by the Elks. That's our motto."

Frontella said he hopes the Valley's veterans will continue coming to each event. The second luncheon is held in November at the Elks Lodge.

"It's important that we recognize them (veterans); honor them," he said.

Also during the event, Tony and Marlynn Gonzales were honored with a Medal of Valor for their son, Tony J. Gonzales, who died in December of 2008 while serving in Iraq.

"We wanted to honor them for his (Gonzales') ultimate sacrifice," Frontella said.

"It's very special that we received this for him," Marlynn Gonzales added.

Donovan said he thinks the veterans look forward to the luncheon each yeah.

"I think they appreciate it," Donovan said. "If it wasn't for them we wouldn't have the freedoms that we do.

"For instance, freedom of speech," he said. "Even if someone doesn't like what we say, we still have the right to say it.

"And that's thanks to the veterans," Donovan said.

Frontella said he appreciative of everyone who helped make the event possible.

"We're looking forward to seeing everyone again in November," he said.
