The Kiwanis Club of Los Baños help celebrate Father's Day in a different way this year. For the first of many years, the club spent Sunday welcoming the community to a cookout in honor of 'dad.'
Club member Chuck Martin said he thought the event went pretty well for being a first time occasion.
"It's something new, different," Martin said. "And it's a start and hopefully we'll establish a tradition for Father's Day."
Gloria Mendonca, Kiwanis member, said she was pleased with the event, something she described as a "trial and error" period for next year.
Club Member Jim Valentine said they planned to continue serving theri hotdog barbecue lunch for as many people showed up.
"Since it's our first year, we had no idea what to expect," Valentine said.
Pat Selinger said since it's Father's Day, a barbecue cookout "fit better" instead of the traditional breakfast.
The Los Baños High School Hallway Jazz Band performed for cookout attendees, and later in the day the club hosted a talent show, featuring many acts from the community.
Reginald Grimes, Jr., 10, played his keyboard in the talent show and won first place. Grimes, Jr. received $50 for his win.
Frankie Esparza, 8, said she thought the face painting station was the best part of the cookout.
"But the hotdog was really good, too," Esparza said. "I think they should have this for Father's Day every year because on Mother's Day they had that thing for the mothers."
Martin said in comparison to the club's other fundraiser, Mother's Day in the Park, the Father's Day had to start from scratch, whereas the other event has been around for many years.
"We're hoping to get more groups involved next year; we're hoping to expand and come back with more entertainment and parts of the event," he said.
Martin said he thought the fishing poles, Kiwanis Club donations, among other prizes, would be the first to go.
"What else are you going to do on Father's Day," Martin said. "Barbecue and fish.
"With our economy the way it is, we need home-grown events like this," he said.
