Hospital volunteers honored for services

Ceremony held at España's, certificates presented

April 25, 2008

España's hosted the annual Memorial Hospital Los Baños volunteer recognition ceremony for the third year in a row on Wednesday, where the hospital's volunteers were thanked and awarded for their continuous support and dedication to the community.

Hospital administrator Richard Liszewski started off the series of speeches and said while the volunteers' lunch happens once a year, the thanks the hospital extends to each of them carries on every day of the year.

"You do have our utmost respect," Liszewski said to the volunteers. "You choose to spend a portion of your day dedicating your time.

"And there's things we wouldn't be able to do without your help," he said. "Your services are noticed; not just today, but every day."

Following Liszewski's appreciation speech, the hospital presented awards to each of the volunteers for the hours they have contributed. Each participant was honored with a certificate and either a badge or pin depending on how many hours they've volunteered at the hospital.

The Volunteer of Year award was next on the list of recognitions and Los Baños Arts Council member Mary Harris was chosen to be this years' recipient, given by volunteer President Jean Bright.

"I was so surprised to receive this award," Harris said after the ceremony. "And she (Bright) knew so much about me."

Bright has been serving as president nine times since she's been a volunteer, she said.

"This is my last time," Bright said.

Bright also said presenting the award to Harris meant a lot because "she is very talented and deserving.

"She's been with us for over 20 years," Bright said.

Harris said she was very happy to be given the honor of Volunteer of the Year, and said the most rewarding part of being a volunteer at the hospital is "helping people and making them feel more comfortable. I enjoy seeing people do things they didn't think they could do," she said.
