The freshman Tigers' bats were red hot during the three-day Easter Classic tournament in Merced and Atwater this week swatting in 51 runs to the opposition's six.

On Wednesday, the team sealed a first-place finish in the tourney by beating Sierra High School 11-5 in a game that featured clutch hitting by the Tigers.

Tied at one after Zack Brazil crossed the plate in the top of the first inning and a Sierra runner did the same in the bottom half, Matt Nunes opened the second inning with a triple to center field. He put another run in Los Baños' books as Ryan Carmo reached first on a Sierra error.

Sierra tied the game at two, all in the bottom of the third, but that was as close as the team would come to taking the lead.

With two out and Ernie Fuentes aboard with a single to start the fourth inning, Tyler Ballard singled to center. His hit was followed by a double to center field by Brazil that sent Fuentes and Ballard home. Nick Gilardi's walk was followed by a single by Derrick Velasquez which loaded the base for the Tigers.

Brazil scored Los Baños' fifth run when Trever Cascia singled, and Gilardi crossed the plate when Nunes drew a walk. Carmo also battled Sierra's pitcher to four-ball count bringing Velasquez home. At his second at bat of the inning, Fuentes singled to bring Cascia and Nunes home, but he and Carmo were stranded on base when the next batter grounded out.

The Tigers put up their final two runs of the game in the fifth when Sid Staton hit a lead-off double to center field, Brazil singled and Gilardi reached first on an error sending Staton home. After Brazil was thown out at third on a fielder's choice, Cascia hit a sacrifice fly that scored Gilardi.

Sierra tried to battle back in the bottom of the fifth but came away with just three runs.

Velasquez pitched all seven innings for the Tigers.

"The tournament was good for the guys' confidence after their loss to Turlock," coach Robert Smith stated in an e-mail after the tournament. "Their hard work really paid off but we have to keep working hard to be successful in the last 10 games. Our league is tough so there is no room for taking a break. They are excited and cannot wait for next week's league games."

Los Baños defeated the Merced Bears on Monday, 16-1. Yet despite the number of runs, Smith said, "We did not hit well with runners in scoring positions. The game was closer than the score shows." Smith also said his batters struck out 11 times during the game.

Matt Nunes pitched a complete game for the Tigers.

Trever Cascia batted 2-4 with two doubles, while Daniel McDonnell hit 2-5 and Cody Gomes hit 2-3.
