An update on Los Baños' efforts to recoup the nearly $2 million embezzled by a former city employee was given at this week's City Council meeting.

Former city employee Mary Ann Jones was sentenced to eight years in prison after pleading no contest to embezzlement charges Oct. 20. As part of her plea agreement Jones was ordered to pay the city of Los Baños $1.75 million in restitution.

Interim Police Chief Mark Knapp said the city has possession of Jones' home in Merced, but there is an unresolved issue regarding the residence.

"It's an issue with the current tenant," Knapp said. "There's an eviction process going on with that, then we'll turn it over to a property management company."

Knapp said Jones' home in Dos Palos has been offered to the city, but Los Baños has to get the appraised value of the property and determine if it wants possession of it.

"It does have a mortgage against it so there's a decision to be made there," he said.

The city has also received more than $14,000 in cash. Vehicles that have been taken by Los Baños include a truck, three sedans, two all terrain vehicles and a utility trailer.

Knapp said there's also some furniture available to the city that it could sell through an online auction.

City Attorney William Vaughn said he is working on finding other assets. He's not optimistic.

"I don't think there are probably significant other assets," Vaughn said.

When the Enterprise asked Mayor Tommy Jones if Los Baños would ever be able to recover the funds that were taken he responded, "We don't know. There's some things we're working on that we can't talk about. But, of course I hope that we can use every measure we can to get back everything."

Knapp said the restitution agreement does not end with the assets Mary Ann Jones has turned in. He indicated that the restitution agreement continues until the city gets the full $1.75 million.

Mary Ann Jones could be eligible for parole as soon as 2013.
