The newly formed Pack No. 58 held the camp entitled “Scouting the Seven Seas” at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and included activities such as archery, marksmanship and a gutter regatta.
“The director was here yesterday and he said we have the best camp,” said parent and camp organizer Jill Savage.
The 17 scouts that attended the three-day event agreed.
Wyatt Laguna, 7, just joined the Cub Scouts on Monday and by the next day he already earned two merit badges; one for archery and the other one for marksmanship.
“I couldn’t sleep last night I was so excited,” he said of the marksmanship challenge, which turned out to be every boys favorite event.
Fellow newbie cub scout Tommy Zuehlke came two points short of earning his marksmanship badge but said he would continue practicing and try again.
“I’m working on Wolf and hopefully will graduate to Bears,” Zuehlke, 8, said. In the Cub Scouts there are different ranks with Bears being the second highest before graduating to the Boy Scouts.
On the final day of the camp Savage and co-organizer Lori Marks—Noble let the scouts play games, do arts and crafts and race the model boats they made. Later that day the scouts were treated to a swim party at the public pool.
Savage said Pack No. 58 has come a long way since October when they branched off from another pack to offer children a different type of scouting experience.
One of the things Savage and Marks-Noble definitely wanted to keep was the scout camp.
“We started planning since February,” she said. “We’ve been on the phone, getting permits, recruiting.”
Savage said before Pack No. 58 her only role in the scouts was as a parent but has since come to respect scouting’s values -- friendship and citizenship -- even more and hopes that the pack’s newest members will too.
“The kids are returning every day so they must like it,” she said. For more information on how to join Cub Scout Pack No. 58 call Jill Savage at 829-1824 or Lori Marks—Noble at 826-6092.
