Letter: A way to honor veterans

Many honors have been bestowed upon our veterans. These dedicated men and women have continued to serve our country long after their military duties were completed. Our very active Veterans of Foreign Wars chapter offers flag-raising services at many of our local events. When God calls, they conduct military honors for our fallen. Now, as the whole country acknowledges our veterans with Veterans Day ceremonies, this is our opportunity as citizens of Los Baños to remember them in a very special way.

Last week at the City Council meeting, it was announced that a community center naming committee was to be formed. Why not dispense with another committee and name the community center with some form of heading that honors our veterans (for example, Veterans Community Center or Los Baños Veterans Community Center?). When the naming of the new high school was proposed, an overwhelming number of citizens expressed their approval for the word "veterans" to be incorporated. A wall with the names of the men and woman from Los Baños who have served in the military can be installed as a permanent tribute, too. We think that this would be a fitting memory of the service to our country by those who call (or have called) Los Baños their home.
